Freedom University students were frustrated by the quarantine across campus

LYNCHBURG, Va. – On August 26, the University of Freedom reported 159 active cases of COVID-19 with 500 students and staff members instructed to quarantine.

LU leaders now call the next two weeks a temporary mitigation period.

As of Monday, Aug. 30, the campus is in quarantine. Classes will be online, large indoor meetings will be suspended and restaurants will only be able to be removed until September 10th.

Senior Kendall Covington and young Nathan Grimes say it’s a little too late.

“I’m upset. I mean, of course, I’m glad that steps are being taken to protect the welfare of students; but to be honest, this is a measure,” Covington said.

“If we had taken some very simple steps, we could have avoided this whole problem,” Grimes said.

Leaders are encouraging social distancing and the use of masks, but it is not necessary.

Students say they are never encouraged and feel frustrated by the lack of communication.

“Everyone in Liberty [University] it’s here because they want a real college experience in person; and when you get it, it looks like you’re wasting your money, “Grimes said.

First year Landon Nesbitt has only been on campus for a week and says he feels lied to.

“That was the main reason I came to Liberty, the fact that I was open, learning in person, no masks were required and the vaccine was not necessary,” Nesbitt said.

He started an online petition, which has more than 800 signatures.

“Although COVID is still underway, it is still one thing, it is very real; each student, individually, knew the risks when choosing Liberty, ”said Nesbitt.

He says if the quarantine is not lifted, a protest is possible.

“If a peaceful protest is needed, this is what we will do,” Nesbitt said.
