The man escaped from a correctional facility on the night of July 31, 1992, according to a statement from the New South Wales (NSW) police force on Wednesday.
“At that time, efforts to locate the man failed,” the statement says.
The man’s name is Darko Desic, a NSW police spokeswoman confirmed Thursday to CNN.
When he was 35, when he escaped, the 64-year-old went to Dee Why police station and turned himself in to police on Sunday, the statement continues.
Desic has been arrested and charged with escaping custody from lawful custody.
“Police will allege the man used tools such as a saw blade and screw cutters to free himself from prison custody in 1992,” the statement said.
Desic was denied bail and appeared in court on Tuesday. He was formally denied bail and will reappear in court on Sept. 28, police said.
CNN has been unable to contact Desic’s legal representatives for comment.
Ever since he escaped, he has worked as a handyman doing strange tasks and was known as “Dougie,” 9News reported.
Desic had recently slept in the sand dunes of Avalon, on the beaches of northern Sydney, 9News added.
Local resident Belle Higgins created a fundraising page to help Desic. The campaign had raised more than A $ 6,000 ($ 4,390) in four hours.
