Gabrielle Union was “devastated” and “broken to pieces” after Dwyane Wade confessed to conceiving a baby with another woman.
The former “Being Mary Jane” star recalls the life-changing moment in her new memoirs, “You Got Anything Stronger,” saying that she and the NBA star “weren’t in a good place.” when the baby was conceived, but was in a “much better” state when he learned the truth.
“To say I was devastated is to choose a word on a low shelf for convenience. There are people – strangers I will never know – who have been upset because they have not previously talked about this trauma, “writes Union.
“I haven’t had words and even after unpublished therapies, I’m not sure I have them now. But the truth is important.”
The “Bring It On” star began dating Wade in 2008 and was the father of his 7-year-old son, Xavier, in 2013, while he and Union were on vacation.
The retired Miami Heat player was also the father of 19-year-old Zaire and 14-year-old Zaya, as well as a tutor to his nephew, 19-year-old Dahveon. Finally, Wade and Union married in 2014 and tried to have their own children, which proved to be a challenge when Union suffered several miscarriages.
“You’ve had enough,” she said. I looked at D with instant rage. Amazing, really. I was fighting with my husband why was it best for my body? I really thought surrogacy and a baby were our chance to get it right? To rebalance? ”Union, 48, recalls in his memoirs.
“I said calmly,‘ Now will you be the voice of reason? Really? Really? Is that where we are today? He looked me in the eyes. “As much as we love this baby, I love you,” she said slowly. “We’ve lost too much in our relationship so it would be nice to encourage you to do something more to your body and your soul.”
The “Moisha” star admits he felt the words of Wade, 39, were a “recognition of failure,” even though they were meant for “concern.”
“Because at that moment I would have sold my soul to win. To get out of the endless cycle of losses. What was the current rhythm of the souls? What was mine worth? she writes.
“The experience of having Dwyane with a baby so easily while I wasn’t able to leave my soul not only broken into pieces, but broken into fine powder that was scattered by the wind,” he explains. “With desperate hands, we put together everything we could to become something new little by little.”
Finally, the couple welcomed their daughter Kaavia through a surrogate, in 2018. They also celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary last month.
