Game of the Year: # 2 – Remake of Final Fantasy VII

GOTYFF7

Yes, it finally happened: 2020 was the year we actually got a remake of Final Fantasy VII. Well, part of at least one. It may not cover the full story, but Final Fantasy VII Remake carries its love of the original game as a badge of honor. It’s as much a tribute to the classic Japanese role-playing game as it is a reimagining one, but those of you who have finished it will know that it is somehow more than that.

From the brilliantly crafted battle system to the excellent soundtrack, Remake does so many good things. It is both a powerful journey of nostalgia and a captivating adventure in itself, and it does a particularly amazing job of introducing a cast of beloved characters. It is a real achievement.

Now we’re not saying Final Fantasy VII Remake is perfect (it certainly has a good chunk of its flaws), but there’s no denying the sheer number of memorable moments it parades in front of the player. We will avoid spoiling any of these moments, but there is no doubt that Remake has had a lasting impact on our views on Cloud and company.

And these boss fights! Suffice it to say that Remake has some of the best boss battles not only of 2020, but also on PS4 in general. We’ve re-played the game several times just to relive some of those encounters, and this also shows the strength of the title’s seriously impressive combat system, which combines action with turn-based commands almost perfectly.

So much could have gone wrong with Final Fantasy VII Remake, but here we are, looking at a real candidate for the Game of the Year. A great game and hopefully the start of something very special.

How we decide our game of the year: This December, our editorial team created a list of nominees for the Game of the Year based on our own review scores and several other factors. After much discussion, we narrowed down the list of candidates and asked all Push Square staff and the Push Square community to vote for their five favorites using a points-based system. The ten games with the most points before the set deadline were determined as our 2020 favorites.
