Whether it was releases full of new content or new experiences that took established franchises in new directions, there really was something for everyone. We lost track of how many times the Final Fantasy VII Remake makes us smile like idiots during our time with the release, but that’s the power of this shockingly performed remake. Doing justice to the original Final Fantasy VII would never be easy, but somehow, Square Enix managed to recapture the magic, while expanding its world and its beloved cast of characters. In addition, the battle system is exemplary: a real evolution of the tried and tested ATB formula of the series. Sure, this is just the first chapter of a new saga, but we can’t wait to see what comes next.

Demon’s Souls on PS5 is exactly the same game as the 2009 original, which means it’s still a pretty great role-playing game. Five immense and mysterious worlds are home to some of the most haunting games of the next generation right now, but you can conquer their inhabitants in the most or least possible way. The Build variety is off the Demon’s Souls lists, with a long list of weapons and armor to customize your character and plenty of stats to increase when you’ve gathered enough souls to do so. It’s the best game available on PS5 right now and one of the best role-playing games of 2020.

A game we started calling Yakuza: Like a Dragon Quest, here in the Push Square office, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is one of the most interesting role-playing games we’ve played in a long time. We need everything we already like about Yakuza: the realistic setting, the brilliant characters, the fascinating stories, the crazy side activities and it combines it with … An adventure based on parties with turn-based battles? Yes, and it works amazingly well. RGG Studio really took a risk and is worth it in what is one of the most memorable and unique games of 2020.

Our 2017 game is back and it’s better than ever, despite being a 10/10 masterpiece. Persona 5 Royal isn’t just one of the absolute best PS4 role-playing games: it’s one of the best Japanese role-playing games ever made. Quite a pleasure for the senses and improved to a point where the original Persona 5 becomes completely redundant. Royal’s new ending is amazing, his new characters are fantastic and his countless improvements in the game elevate him to hitherto unthinkable heights.
