Generous donors help keep Nebraska Cornhuskers home game streak alive

Nebraska’s proud sales streak will survive one more week.

The Cornhuskers announced Tuesday that Fordham’s game on Saturday will be the 376th consecutive sale of Memorial Stadium (85,000 capacity), continuing a streak dating back to the 1962 Bob Devaney era.

The rest of the tickets that were purchased will go to a new program that Nebraska started, called the Red Carpet Experience, which provides tickets and a small meal to children in eighth grade or younger.

“We’ve had two generous donors who have bought the rest of the tickets for the opening of the home so we can provide them to young people across the state,” said Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts.

The school said there are still tickets left for each of the other six games at home in Nebraska this season. The record has been the subject of great concern in Nebraska as the Huskers opened the season with a 33-20 loss to Illinois. Coach Scott Frost, who is now in his fourth season 12-21 in Nebraska and 9-18 in the Big Ten, and the two non-conference home games against Fordham and Buffalo have not generated much excitement.

Alberts said last week, in an appearance on the university’s “Sports Nightly” program, that continuing the streak will be a challenge this season, but that he continues to work to keep it alive.

“That’s really important to us,” Alberts said. “It’s important for our football program. It’s important for our fans. We have tickets to sell; we have tickets to move.”

Alberts said he was optimistic the streak could survive, but pressured fans to help them.

“We have work to do,” he continued. “I would challenge and ask Husker Nation to continue to help us. Ask your neighbor if they have bought season tickets for Husker football and put some pressure on it, because we want to keep that streak.”
