Former U.S. Republican President George W. Bush said the images of the congressional assault on Washington were “disgusting” and typical of a “banana republic,” while accusing Donald Trump, without calling directly, of ‘”inflame” with “falsehoods and false hopes” his supporters.
Bush, the last Republican president to hold the White House until Donald Trump’s arrival in 2017, said in a statement that he viewed with “disbelief and dismay” the “scenes of chaos” caused by the assault on Congress starring thousands of supporters of Trump.
“This is how election results are challenged in a banana republic, not in our democratic republic,” Bush said in his statement on the violent assault on the Capitol.
“I am horrified by the reckless behavior of some political leaders since the election and by the lack of respect shown today to our institutions, traditions and our security forces. The violent assault on the Capitol, and the disruption of the sessions mandated constitutionally by Congress, was conducted by people whose passions have been inflamed by falsehoods and false hopes, “the former president added.
Biden certification
