German bishop calls for changing the position of the Catholic Church with homosexual people

Berlin. The Bishop of Essen in West Germany, Franz Josef Overbeck, call for a review of the Catholic Church’s position on homosexuals and a rejection of a document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith against the blessing of same-sex couples.

“We need a new vision of homosexuality, serious and respectful”, Overbeck stated in a letter to the parishes of his diocese.

The doctrine of the Church, according to Overbeck, needs “a broader view of human sexuality.”

“The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s statement has offended many people with homosexual orientation. Such a position is not accepted at other times and what believers think cannot be overlooked.”, He added.

Overbeck says he has received letters from many Catholics rejecting Rome’s official position.

The bishop maintains that any fundamentalist temptation must be avoided and that, despite respect for tradition, it must be understood in the light of modern times.

Overbeck also refers to recent studies that show that a simplified view of human sexuality is part of the origin of the stances that led to “the horrific cases of abuse in our Church.”

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith had declared that the Church should not bless homosexual unions.

Prior to Overbeck, a group of 300 Austrian Catholic priests had spoken out against this statement.

“This decree offends many Christians and discredits Jesus’ liberating message, ”the statement says.

“We vehemently protest against the idea that loving gay couples are not part of God’s plan”, Add the document.
