FRANKFURT, Sept. 14 (Reuters) – After 16 defining years of the era at the helm of Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel stops, so a traditional marzipan maker hopes to sweeten her departure with a special memory for to his followers.
“It’s a memory for fans or non-fans of Angela Merkel, who is standing still and has completed her service. So we hope the person either puts her somewhere in the house,” said Thomas Zuber, manager of ‘Odenwaelder Marzipan in the state of Bavaria, southwestern Germany.
“We made them last for two years, so people can extend Merkel’s time for two more years,” Zuber added with a laugh.

The marzipan pastry chef has been in operation for 40 years and, although the family business now has machinery to be part of the mass production, it has also maintained its artisanal skills.
“Mrs. Merkel is a special edition for us. We will produce about 500 pieces,” Zuber said. The company designed a handmade mold by Merkel that is then filled with marzipan.
The family business had the idea of remembering Merkel a couple of months ago and is working to complete the line with her team of eight people. The first batch will take two days to complete on the team and comprises eight stages of preparation.
Now the race for a new German chancellor is over. The September 26 election pits Social Democrat candidate Olaf Scholz against conservative rival Armin Laschet and Annalena Baerbock of the Greens. Read more
