Guatemala’s anti-narcotics forces captured an alleged man on Friday drug trafficker claimed in extradition by the United States, noted for cocaine trafficking in that country between 2015 and 2016, the prosecution reported.

The alleged drug trafficker, identified as Gersom Muñoz Cifuentes, alias “duc“Or” Duko “was arrested in the municipality of Esperanza, in the west of Central America, told reporters Juan Luis Pantaleón, spokesman for the Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office).

Muñoz is “required to appear in court” in an eastern district court in the state of Texas (south) for crimes related to the trafficking of cocaine shipments, the official added.

“The investigation identified Muñoz (…) as a member of an organization dedicated to the drug trafficking“From at least 2015 to at least September 2016,” he added.

The detainee is the ninth alleged drug trafficker captured in Guatemala with a request for extradition from US justice in the first two months of the year.

According to the authorities, large international cartels, with the help of local drug traffickers, use Guatemala and the rest of Central America for transporting drugs and money laundering, activities that affect the criminal violence that plagues the region.
