Giants one step away from securing ticket when sweeping

CHICAGO – Wilmer Flores hit a homer and pushed three runs, Kris Bryant scored twice against his former team and the San Francisco Giants clung on to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 on Sunday and go on to seven straight wins, his longest streak of the campaign.

With the best mark in the Major Leagues, the Giants tied their best streak since winning seven games in August 2020.

St. Francis reached the seventh inning with a 6-3 lead before the Cubs scored twice to end Logan Webb’s task (10-3). Chicago filled the bases with an out, but right-hander Tyler Rogers struck out Willson Contreras with an 8-2 rejection instead of 3-2. He followed him with another punch to Alfons Rivas, also at full count, to put the audience on their feet.

The Cubs capped the potential tiebreaker in the ninth inning after Jake McGee allowed a double to emerging hitter Patrick Wisdom. But Frank Schwindel and Ian Happ connected rounds to the initial to end the game.

For the Puppies, the Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 4-2 with a score, Willson Contreras 4-0, Robinson Chirinos 2-1 with a push. The Dominican Sergio Alcantara 3-0 with a score.
