Gleyber will see more time as 2B now

NEW YORK – Gleyber Torres returns to second base after playing as the New York Yankees shortstop.

The 24-year-old Venezuelan was the starting midfielder in his first two campaigns with the Yankees, in 2018 and 2019. He went to the shortstop when Didi Gregorius suffered an injury and took over the post in 2020 after Gregory signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Philistines.

Torres made nine mistakes in last year’s abbreviated campaign and racked up 18 in the current one, the second-highest number in the American League, just behind Bo Bichette (Toronto). Torres committed a couple of mischiefs in the weekend’s series at the Mets Stadium in New York, including one that led to three dirty runs in the 7-6 loss Sunday night.

DJ LeMahieu was scored as third baseman and Tyler Wade as torpedo player for Monday’s game against Minnesota. Yankees manager Aaron Boone reported that Colombian Gio Urshela would move from the anteroom to the shortstop starting Tuesday night at the start of a series in Baltimore.

“I feel like last week’s tension has affected him,” Boone said of Torres. “Obviously we’re at a critical point in the year.”
