General Motors has been one of the largest automobile and truck companies in America for over 100 years and, with a huge “reinvention” underway, they have been positioning themselves for a long time.
Science on climate change has made it clear that the future of transport needs to be greener and cleaner. Vehicles are one of the main sources of greenhouse gases and, since fossil fuels are a limited and polluting resource, car companies will have to resort to new technologies in order to compete in the global market.
GM, in a big pivot just a couple of years ago, embraces that future with both hands. In November, GM withdrew from a lawsuit by the Trump administration against strict California emission standards and invited other companies to do the same. Now, in a fun new announcement, it has announced that GM will add 30 electric vehicle (EV) models by 2025, in just four years.
In the 90-second spot, which will be broadcast during the Super Bowl, Will Ferrell points out that Norway sells more electric vehicles per capita than the United States, and that it clearly takes this fact personally. Do you let Norway dominate the US? There is no way friggin ‘.
“With GM ‘s new Ultium battery, we will destroy them lugers“says Ferrell.” APPLY them. “American competitiveness for victory.
Ferrell runs and grabs Kenan Thompson and Awkwafina and tells them to meet him as soon as possible in Norway with an EV. They all end up in the wrong Scandinavian countries, and it’s just silly, smart and beautiful and now I want to buy a GM EV.

Even the slogan “everyone is there” (highlighting the VE) is just clever. Big money can buy you great marketing, but when a company leads climate-friendly initiatives and combines that drive with fun marketing messages, it’s a plus for everyone.
GM’s greenest, cleanest pivot is a good indication that the tide is finally turning when it comes to electric car technologies. Over the years, we have seen how the conceptual phase is slowly developing and hipsters and environmentalists have always embraced electric cars. But that push seems to have the potential to get more electric vehicles to more American garages and to normalize the idea that the future lies in climate-friendly innovation.

“Our team accepted the challenge of transforming product development into GM and positioning our company for a fully electric future,” said Mary Barra, GM’s president and CEO when the company first announced its new battery technology last March. “What we’ve done is build a multi-brand, multi-segment EV strategy with economies of scale that rival our full-size truck business with much less complexity and even more flexibility.”
“Thousands of GM scientists, engineers and designers are working to execute a historic reinvention of the company,” added GM President Mark Reuss. “They are on the cusp of offering a profitable electric vehicle business that can satisfy millions of customers.”
Whether GM makes these changes because political winds change with the election of Joe Biden, the capitalist landscape has changed with consumers demanding products that are better for the environment or if the company just wants to do the right thing, the result end is the same. More climate-friendly cars will come to the market and the opportunity to improve our Norwegian friends in the electric vehicle race.
