DETROIT – General Motors on Tuesday confirmed plans to produce a fully electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup at a new flagship electric vehicle assembly plant being built in Detroit.

The truck is part of a previously announced $ 2.2 billion investment in the plant to produce a series of next-generation electric vehicles that will begin later this year with a fully electric GMC Hummer pickup. Other vehicles planned for installation include the newly introduced Hummer EV SUV and a multi-passenger autonomous shuttle known as the Cruise Origin.

The plant, which GM renamed Factory Zero last year, in a gesture with the zero-emission electric vehicles that will occur there, is critical to the car’s electric vehicle plans. It is the first of four U.S. facilities that GM has said will move from the production of vehicles with internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. It will be a test and testing point for the company’s promise that it can produce cost-effective electric vehicles.

“Vehicles from Factory Zero will change the world and how the world sees electric vehicles,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a statement. “The GMC Hummer EV SUV joins its stable partner in the realm of genuine top trucks, and Chevrolet will take everything loyal Chevy truck buyers love about Silverado (and more) and put it in an electric pickup which will delight retail and commercial customers “.

GM declined to provide when the Chevrolet tablet went into production at Factory Zero, a plant that spans 4.5 million square feet on the outskirts of Detroit and borders the city of Hamtramck. The Hummer EV collection is expected to go on sale this fall, followed by the Hummer EV SUV in early 2023.

According to GM, the new Chevy Silverado EV will have a range of more than 400 miles with a full charge.

The announced vehicles are part of GM’s plan to launch 30 new electric vehicles by 2025 with a $ 27 billion investment in electric and autonomous vehicles during that time period. By then, the company plans to sell at least one million electric vehicles annually, on its way to the transition to being a fully electric carmaker by 2035.

General Motors introduced the GMC Hummer EV 2022 sport utility truck, or SUT, online and during national television broadcasts on October 20, 2020.
