It could have offered a mass of coal.
Internet domain monster GoDaddy sent employees an email promising a Christmas bonus, which turned out to be a computer security test.
About 500 employees clicked on the Dec. 14 email from the Arizona-based company, which offered a $ 650 holiday bonus, and asked them to fill out a form with their personal information.
“Happy GoDaddy Holidays! 2020 has been a record year for GoDaddy, thank you guys! “, Said the message, obtained by the television station Phoenix KPNX.
“While we can’t celebrate together during our annual holiday party, we want to show our gratitude and share a unique $ 650 holiday bonus.”
Two days later, employees received an email from the head of security at GoDaddy saying, “You are receiving this email because you have suspended our recent fishing test,” the Copper Courier newspaper reported.
Many social media users attacked GoDaddy over the coals and said the test was deaf in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic that has left millions of Americans financially depleted.
The company said Thursday it apologized to people who considered the email to be “insensitive,” adding that it “takes the security of our platform extremely seriously.”
“We understand that some employees were upset by the fishing attempt and felt they were insensitive, which is why we apologized,” a spokesman said in a statement.
