Golden Globe 2021: Regina King gets the nomination for best director

Regina King makes history the only African American woman to receive a better nod at the Golden Globes

  • Selma filmmaker Ava DuVernay was the only African-American woman to receive a nomination for Best Director in 2014
  • It’s especially impressive considering that Amazon’s acclaimed drama marked the directorial debut of the 50-year-old Oscar feature film.
  • One Night in Miami also nodded to Best Supporting Actor (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Best Original Song for Speak Now (Leslie Odom Jr. and Sam Ashworth)

Oscar winner Regina King managed to make history, once again, after the nominations for the 78th Golden Globe were announced on Wednesday morning.

The 50-year-old triple threat is just the second African-American woman to receive a nomination for Best Director at the Globes after Selma filmmaker Ava DuVernay in 2014.

It’s especially impressive considering that Amazon Studios ’acclaimed drama, based on the 2013 play by Kemp Powers, marked Regina’s debut as a feature film director.

King competes for the honor against two more women – Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Young Promise) – as well as Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7) and David Fincher (Mank).

Hamilton student Leslie Odom Jr., who played Sam Cooke, received the only acting gesture between the One Night in Miami ensemble and best supporting actor.

The 39-year-old Tony winner faces stiff competition from Sacha Baron Cohen, Daniel Kaluuya, Jared Leto and Bill Murray.

Leslie and songwriter Sam Ashworth are also in favor of the best original song for Speak Now, which they will likely perform on stage The Beverly Hilton or virtually.
