Nomadland! Easily the most deserving candidate here and a welcome winner. It’s a beautiful film and given the usual HFPA options, it would have made more sense to see something more conventional like The Trial of the Chicago 7 win a lot. A good ending to a strange night.

Well, Jason Sudeikis wasn’t the only hooded actor tonight. Joaquin Phoenix has just stumbled upon one to announce that Andra Day is the surprise winner of an award that many meant for Carey Mulligan or perhaps Frances McDormand. A very emotional day is also extremely surprising and, in a category that is still at stake, it will help him get an Oscar nomination.
