California representatives Young Kim (R) and Michelle Steel (R) revoked their endorsements of Texas Congress candidate Sery Kim (R) after saying they did not want Chinese immigrants “here at all.”
In a statement released Friday and shared with The Hill on Saturday, lawmakers said they “can’t have a good conscience” to continue supporting Sery Kim, who is running to represent the 6th district of the Texas Congress.
The women of the GOP congress previously endorsed Sery Kim, who is Korean American early March.
“As the first Korean and American Republican women to serve in Congress, we want to empower and elevate other AAPI members [Asian American and Pacific Island] community that wants to serve its communities, ”lawmakers wrote.
Lawmakers said they urged Sery Kim to apologize, but noted that his words “were contrary to what we stand for.”
“We will continue to speak in support of our AAPI community,” they added.
The statement comes after Sery Kim on Wednesday attacked China and Chinese immigrants during a Republican Party candidate forum The Dallas Morning News.
“I don’t want them here at all,” Sery Kim said. “They rob us of our intellectual property. They give us coronavirus. They are not responsible. ”
After the audience applauded his statements, Sery Kim kept saying, “Frankly, I can say that because I’m Korean.”
The comments came amid an increase in anti-Asian violence in America in the past year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus is believed to have originated in Wuhan, China.
The issue of anti-Asian hatred reached the fever of last month when a shooting at several spas in the Atlanta area left eight people dead, including six women of Asian descent.
Kim cheeses confirmed to CNN who made the remarks but said they were aimed at the Communist Party of China and not at all Asian Americans.
In response to the revoked approvals, Sery Kim told CNN that he is “surprised that, in an effort to combat Asian-American hatred, the liberal media is targeting me, an Asian, and an immigrant, in an effort to to paint myself as an anti-Asian and anti-immigrant just to speak out against the oppressive Chinese Communist Party. ”
