Burr, a retiring Republican, voted Saturday to condemn former President Trump for the only article inciting insurgency at the U.S. Capitol earlier this year.
“The evidence is compelling that President Trump is guilty of inciting an insurgency against an egalitarian branch of government and that the prosecution rises to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors,” Burr said in a statement Saturday. “So I voted to condemn.”
The Republican Party of North Carolina hours later condemned Burr, aligning himself with the former president.
“Republicans in North Carolina sent Senator Burr to the U.S. Senate to confirm the Constitution and his vote today to condemn it in a trial he declared unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing,” the party president said.

A poll conducted late last year showed Lara Trump as the favorite among potential Republican primary candidates to fill Burr’s vacancy. She is married to former President Eric’s son and was a surrogate surrogate for her 2016 and 2020 campaigns.
Graham, one of Trump’s top loyalists in the Republican caucus, also said Sunday that Congress “has opened a Pandora’s box to future presidents” and “abused” the model of control from the legislature to the executive branch.
“I do not know how [Vice President] Harris is not charged if Republicans take the House because he actually rescued riot police and one of the riot police took to the streets and broke someone’s head, ”Graham said in an apparent reference to the social justice protests taking place during the summer.
