A simple treatment for COVID-19 can be cheaper than $ 20 and is familiar to most elementary school nurses.
Ivermectin is being explored as a potential treatment for coronavirus after a promising new study that showed an 80% reduction in hospitalized deaths of COVID-19 patients.
Only eight out of 573 patients who received ivermectin died, compared with 44 out of 510 individuals who died after receiving a placebo.
A previous study of the prescription drug, which costs between $ 17 and $ 43 per course of treatment, according to GoodRx, revealed promising results in April: removing all viral RNA within 48 hours of a single dose. .
Liverpool University virologist Andrew Hill has described the new study as “transformational” in the search for coronavirus therapy. His findings, based on data from more than 1,400 patients, were made public in a video posted on YouTube in which Hill explains his findings in a previously live broadcast. The research is currently awaiting a peer review before it is published.
“If we see these same trends constantly observed in more studies, then it really will be a transformative treatment,” Hill said.
However, critics have called the conclusion of Hill’s study premature, urging further research before declaring ivermectin an effective treatment, citing other baffled methods they have ultimately been unable to deliver, such as hydroxychloroquine and tocilizumab
“All we have are observational studies and opinions from doctors,” University of Sydney professor Andrew McLachlan said, the Daily Mail reported.
“Many of the current studies have low participant numbers, weak study designs, and inconsistent (and relatively low) ivermectin dosing regimens, with ivermectin often given in combination with other drugs.”
