Hand-drawn game guide removed by Kickstarter after a “legal issue”

Heart, look at them
Color, look at them

Update: It looks like Nintendo’s legal team has attacked again, as its creator has disconnected the Kickstarter Guides game manual. The campaign had raised more than $ 322,000 before withdrawing it.

Original story [Fri 6th Aug, 2021 17:00 BST]: Remember the guides? We certainly don’t, because of this terrible stroke. But we’re pretty sure they were great, fun books full of beautiful art and weird semi-canonical facts about how Mario is secretly an egg tower with a raincoat.

Anyway, now you can (or … soon) relive those glorious days full of manuals with Kickstarter from Hand-Drawn Game Guides. You can recognize the name by our coverage of the work of artist Philip Summers; now Summers makes them super extra (un) official, with lots of adorable hand-drawn art (as you can guess from the title) and a lot professional hard covers.

The games that receive guides are Metroid, The Legend of Zelda and a combined guide for Contra and Ninja Gaiden. All of them will include a number of guide-type things, such as useful tours, maps, tips, and art, as well as unique aspects of the game experiences told through the characters ’diary entries and storybook-style narratives that they will help you see the games with a new light.

The Kickstarter is live Right Nowand you can pre-order one or all of the guides for a reduced price. Higher levels include original art and stretch targets will potentially add gold edges (oooh) and gold foil to the decks (OOOH).

So go ahead, what guide do you want in your fat hands? Let us know in the comments and check out Zion’s beautiful lyric about her pocket copy of the hand-drawn Zelda manual below.
