THE VEIL: We’ve all seen “single-shot drone shots” in our time on the Internet.
It doesn’t seem that hard when you know how to fly a drone. Just fly over something beautiful, do some posting effects so the colors show up, and voila, you have something pretty nice that people like to see.
Now try adding a story, a script, humans, and the many moving parts of a bowling alley, and you realize that all that landscape drone material could be in the “tell me a dozen” category. (It’s not an insult; it would crash a drone in two seconds. All drones are doing very well.)
Filmmaker Jay Christensen has recently released a drone short film that includes all of the above unexpected elements.
The film is called “Right Up Our Alley” and features a typical night at the bowling alley and Bryant Lake Bowl theater in Minneapolis. And it’s all done in one shot.
The accelerated route through the alley is quite amazing. He starts outside, enters the bowling alley and spends 1 minute and 27 seconds gliding smoothly all over the place. The film ends perfectly with a landing on the narrow return of the pin without a single blow.
In fact, it’s so amazing that it caught the attention of Hollywood people who know what they’re talking about when it comes to cinema. Lee Unkrich, director of “Toy Story 3,” and James Gunn, director of “Guardians of the Galaxy” both were impressed.
