Hawaii reports eight fatalities from COVID and 625 additional infections as it continues to rise

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii on Wednesday reported eight additional fatalities by COVID amid a continuing rise in infections that threatens to overwhelm the state’s health care system.

The death toll from the virus in Hawaii is now 573.

Meanwhile, there were 625 new cases of COVID reported statewide.

Of the new infections on Wednesday:

  • 376 were in Oahu
  • 100 on the island of Hawaii
  • 96 on Maui
  • 39 a Kauai
  • dos a Lanai
  • two to Molokai

There were also 10 residents diagnosed out of state.

The eight people who died were identified by their age and island of residence.

In Oahu, they were:

  • A woman in her 30s
  • A man of about 40 years
  • A woman in her fifties
  • A man in his 60s
  • A woman in her 70s
  • and two men in their eighties

Everyone who was on Oahu had been hospitalized.

The eight dead was a 70-year-old Maui man who died at his home.

With the new infections, the total number of cases in Hawaii since the pandemic began has risen to 57,747. In the last 14 days, state health officials say there have been 9,633 new cases.

The state does not report daily on the vaccination status of those who contract COVID.

About 62.3% of the state’s population is fully vaccinated, while 70.6% have received at least one dose.
