Health experts warn that Michigan could face a further increase in COVID cases

DETROIT – CS Mott Children’s Hospital calls on government and community leaders to step up their efforts to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

The hospital withdrew advertising space in the New York Times and asked leaders to protect children by getting vaccinated and wearing masks.

Last year, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a state of emergency and issued an executive order requiring masks. This year he has left decisions at the local level. Local 4 asked him if he would regret not ordering another term and said the answer is to get vaccinated.

“These vaccines work. They are safe, effective, free and easy to access, ”he said.

Doctors and nursing leaders from 21 Michigan health systems shared an open letter Wednesday urging people to get vaccinated as Michigan faces another increase in cases.

The number of people vaccinated has been reduced.

“For the sake of our economy, sports season and ability to keep our kids in school, we will mask and protect each other,” Whitmer said.

The growing number of cases in Michigan is just one of the reasons health experts are worried about another rise in cases as we head into the fall and winter months.

Beaumont’s chief doctor in infectious diseases, Nick Gilpin, said he saw some red flags. He said he saw more community spread across Beaumont hospitals.

“This is the kind of early warning for COVID. When you start to see the number of communities, the positivity figures for the community are starting to disappear and hospitalizations are usually starting to follow,” Gilpin said.

Gilpin said the COVID positivity rate is now 6-8% in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. He said he is concerned that numbers will continue to rise with students returning to school.
