The designated secretary of the Department of Health, Carlos Mellado, announced today, Monday, that the agency will be attending to the COVID-19 outbreak that was reported in a Bayamón prison.

According to information provided by the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DCR), about 143 offenders were affected by the outbreak.

“Department of Health epidemiologists they will be attending to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the DCR and will establish the plan to contain the infections. “Mellado said in a tweet.

“They will have the necessary tests and treatments to address the situation and ensure the health of everyone in the correctional system,” he added.

Earlier tonight, the DCR confirmed an outbreak in module 1 of the Bayamón 501 correctional institution. According to the designated secretary, Ana Escobar Pabón, 141 of the infected inmates remain asymptomatic.
