Sometimes, when life causes a literal obstacle, it is only necessary improvise and expect the best. Such was the case when a group of health workers with doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were trapped in a snowstorm on the Oregon highway. Not wanting to let these doses expire, they administered them to motorists trapped in the snow.

On Tuesday, Josephine County public health personnel held a mass vaccination event at Illinois Valley High School in Cave Junction, Oregon. After a successful event, the team had six doses left to deliver to Grants Pass recipients. Unfortunately, the team would not reach Grants Pass, as a snowstorm ran aground them on Highway 199, near Hayes Hill.

To make matters worse, the vaccines had to expire before reaching their destination.

But the workers were not about to let the good vaccines expire and, with an ambulance in hand, they set up a makeshift clinic on the road. JCPH staff walked from car to car offering stranded drivers the chance to get the COVID-19 vaccine. In the end, all six doses were administered successfully, which made the most of a bad situation. One of the recipients was even a person who was unable to arrive at the institute in time for the original event.

I love this story. Being trapped in a snowstorm is a terrible situation. He can’t move anywhere and has no idea when he will finally start again. It’s even worse if you’re a health worker trying to administer a vaccine before it expires. But these people took action to make sure no dose was missed.

To add icing on this good story, health department director Mike Weber said the situation was one of the funniest operations he had been a part of.
