MADRID – Atletico Madrid want to continue counting on Hector Herrera another season despite the interest of AS Roma in his signing, according to different sources have reported to ESPN.
The Mexican international has been linked with José Mourinho’s team in recent hours but club sources point out that, except for an unexpected turn, Herrera will follow Wanda Metropolitano because he is considered a “very important” player.
The 31-year-old midfielder has not been able to settle as the undisputed starter in Diego Simeone’s starting XI but the Argentine values the alternatives he offers in midfield.
The Italian press has speculated on the possibility of Atletico Madrid using Herrera in a possible exchange operation with the Spanish Gonzalo Villar.
However, ESPN has learned that it was AS Roma who asked Herrera during these negotiations. However, Gonzalo Villar, 22, would only land in Madrid if Saúl Ñíguez ends up leaving.
Chelsea and Manchester United are still in talks with Atletico over a transfer with a possible buy-out option over the white youth player – but so far neither has reached an agreement with the Mattresses.
Herrera arrived with Porto’s letter of release in the 2019-20 season and is in his third season at Atleti. In the two previous ones it played 27 and 21 parties respectively alternating titles with substitutes.
On a personal level, the international for Mexico was able to leave last summer with several offers from Russia and the USA, among others, but has always prioritized staying in Madrid under the orders of Cholo Simeone.
