Hispanic congressmen in the United States condemn Nayib Bukele’s attacks on Norma Torres

With his comments to the legislature, President Nayib Bukele continues to undermine his credibility in the U.S. Congress, where he has already garnered condemnations from several Democratic and Republican lawmakers.

Over the weekend, Republican President Nayib Bukele launched numerous social media attacks on Guatemalan-born U.S. Congresswoman Norma Torres.

Torres is one of the fiercest critics of Bukele’s governing style, marked by disqualifications and attacks on his critics, as well as opacity in the use of state resources.

This earned him the mockery of the president, calling on the president to have his district’s voters replace him in the next election and a barrage of negative comments from like-minded or pro-government officials. That is, Bukele’s usual treatment and his circle for those who criticize him, ask him awkward questions, or question his management.

In the face of these attacks, the group of Hispanic congressmen (CHC, or Congressional Hispanic Caucus) issued a statement that he “strongly denounces the recent attacks on Congresswoman Norma Torres.”

In this group (which in the American legislative lingo is called “caucus”) there are well-known legislators, such as Senator Bob Menéndez, Representative Albi Sires or the young and popular New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“For six years, Congresswoman Torres has been a vital member of the CHC and a tireless fighter to deepen the role from the United States to Central America, ”said the other members of this group of Hispanic lawmakers, who include influential Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

According to lawmakers, Torres “has always prioritized the rule of law and the fight against corruption in the Northern Triangle (Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras).” This, they claim, to prevent the mass and irregular exodus of citizens from this part of Central America to the United States.

“Unfortunately, the recent series of personal attacks on Congresswoman Torres only serves to undermine her efforts and those of our Caucus to build a relationship between the United States and El Salvador that benefits the people of both countries,” the statement said. of the CHC.

This is relevant, as several of these legislators sit in spaces where the cooperation that the United States can send to El Salvador is determined, and can influence White House ties with the Salvadoran government.

Hispanic lawmakers also condemned the attacks as part of what many women, especially human rights defenders, face “when they challenge those in power.”
