If you don’t think the only thing that matters in boxing is making money, look at what happened over the weekend with Evander Holyfield.

The former heavyweight champion risked his life by climbing into a ring at the age of 58 to gain a few pesos. He starred in a farce for which people paid and which would have done a lot of harm to boxing had it not been for the fact that the sport is already heavily tainted.

The promoters of Triller Fight Club, got a license for Holyfield to fight in Florida and moved there, at the last minute, an evening originally scheduled in California, after a fight of Oscar de la Hoya was suspended because he said he had contracted the COVID-19.

Holyfield offered no apology after losing by technical knockout in the first round to a former MMA fighter, after tipping just once. Apparently he lives out of reality, as after the fight he said he now wanted to fight Mike Tyson.

Hopefully the people at Triller are paying attention, because they should apologize too. Sending in the ring at the last minute to an individual who is four years old at the minimum age to retire — not only did it look bad in a sport that already looked very bad. It also endangered the life of a lone man for economic reasons.
