Oxnord, California. – Firefighters respond to a large brushstorm on the riverbank Tuesday evening between Ventura and Oxnord. Fires and flames were seen throughout Ventura County. The fire broke out at around 5pm on the banks of the Santa Clara River near the River Ridge Golf Club. Large flames filled the sky with smoke, which led to several phone calls to our newsroom. Ventura County Fire Captain Brian McGrath said the fire was burning in heavy arundo plants on the riverbank. At 7:45 p.m., Ventura County Fire said about 50 acres were on fire and no injuries were reported. Some structures caught fire immediately as the highway was surrounded by freeways and other natural obstacles. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office helped evict the homeless and homeless people living in the area. Ventura County, Ventura City and Oxnard City fire departments responded to the fire. Captain McGrath asked spectators to avoid the area because pedestrians had already responded from coming to the area. According to the Ventura City Fire Department, winds were expected at night, helping firefighters fight the blaze. The fire is under investigation, but is believed to have been started by a homeless camp.
