Honduran delegation discusses US reconstruction and migration plan

In addition to talking about access to the vaccine, the Honduran delegation in the United States discussed specific elements about the economic reconstruction and reactivation plan of our country, as well as the impetus of migratory actions for the Honduran community residing in the northern nation.

The Honduran government’s conversation on these issues was with representatives of the administration of US President Joe Biden. The dialogue was conducted with White House National Security Council (NSC) authorities; Ambassador Roberta Jacobson, Coordinator for the Southwestern Border; and with Juan S. González, Senior Director for the Western Hemisphere, with whom the current bilateral commitments and the priorities of the new US government for Honduras and the region were addressed.

On behalf of Honduras, Chancellor Lisandro Rosales, the Minister Coordinating General of Government and the Cabinet of Economic Reactivation, Carles Madero, and the Minister of the Presidency Ebal Díaz took part. The meeting was also attended by the respective ambassadors of the Honduran diplomatic mission to the United States and the representation before the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Suazo and Luis Be.

“President Biden knows the region very well, and in the government of President Obama he as vice president led the issue of the Northern Triangle,” he recalled. Chancellor Rosales upon leaving the meeting.

He added that this good relationship continues even though Biden was out of the government sphere. “Now as president he has set the pattern for the importance that Central America and Mexico have for him,” he stressed.

The Honduran delegation referred to the actions taken so far in the processes of reconstruction and economic reactivation after the severe damage left in the national territory after the passage of the tropical storms of Eta and Iota.

During the conversation, the Honduran delegation also reiterated its gratitude to the United States government and people for the signs of solidarity received to address the country’s health emergency due to the current pandemic and the families affected by natural disasters.

There was also a discussion on the results obtained in terms of security and the figures contained in the reports of the State Department related to the issue of drug trafficking in Honduras.

The importance of establishing a memorandum of understanding for the exchange of information on operations to ensure security in Honduras and throughout the region was also discussed.

During the approach to migration issues, emphasis was placed on the recent actions taken by the US Government for immigration reform and the executive orders signed by Biden, which represent new opportunities for Hondurans in this nation.

In this sense, the significant number of Honduran citizens who are under provisional benefits such as the TPS and Dhaka was detailed, as well as the economic contribution that all Hondurans make to the economy of both countries.
