Honduras celebrates its Bicentennial amid a relentless pandemic

This September 15 marks the commemoration of 200 years of independence Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The commemorative festivities for independence, which are celebrated throughout the month, begin on September 1, National Flag Day, but the most important ceremony is held every September 15, although this time without parades of dozens of secondary and public schools, which usually participate every year.

Today the flags of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, the five Central American countries celebrating their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821, were also hoisted.

Activities began at 6:00 am with seven pipes carried out by members of the Honduran Armed Forces (FAS) from Juana Laínez Hill, in the capital, as a guideline for the inauguration of the Bicentennial. As the pipes rumbled, the five flags, like a single homeland, began to blaze from the heights.

Subsequently, civilian and military authorities surrendered honor to the statue of Francisco Morazán in front of the Central American Bank of Economic Integration (BCIE) in Tegucigalpa.

Similarly, a minute of silence was observed in honor of Hondurans who have died due to the covid-19 pandemic. The pavilions of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica were raised at about 6:15 am at the CABEI, where the Act of Independence was also read.

President Juan Orlando Hernandez and First Lady Ana Garcia participated in the hoisting of the National Flag and reading of the Act of Independence. The event was attended by the ambassadors of the republics of Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Honduras, as well as the authorities of the Municipal Mayor of Central District, led by Nasry Tito Asfura, officials of the CABEI and secretaries of state, among other special guests.

“It is 200 years since this historic feat that meant a before and after for our peoples, that of living free, sovereign and independent was thanks to the sacrifice of men and women who dreamed of a constructive Central America. of his destiny, ”the Honduran president began by saying in his speech Juan Orlando Hernández.

“We have inherited a legacy of courage, bravery, patriotic love, freedom and justice. 200 years have passed and today more than ever this dream of having a strong and united Central America is still valid among those who love this God-blessed region.” added the ruler.

“I am a person convinced of the economic, political and social integration of our people. I firmly believe that this is the right way to go, I am an integrationist by vocation and conviction, united as brothers we are stronger and invincible,” said Hernandez .
