Houston Weather: A strong cold snap causes widespread rainfall in New York

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Another warm, pleasant day is approaching Tuesday in southeast Texas. High temperatures should be exceeded in the mid-70s. We may see a missed shower or two, but most of us will stay dry.

Our next weather system will make its way to Texas on Wednesday and Thursday. This will offer us a possibility of widespread rainfall and also cooler temperatures.

When is the next storm in Houston?

Our final 2020 storm system arrives on Wednesday with thunderstorms and a very cold cold Thursday morning.

When will it rain and how much will we get?

Showers and thunderstorms will be possible on Wednesday and Thursday with the best chance of widespread rain on Thursday. Current expectations are that most will collect 1-2 “of rain with isolated points reaching 3-5”. Street flooding will be a possibility.

Will we have any severe weather?

Severe weather is possible, but the chances seem low at the moment. If we see a strong storm, the main threats will be to damage the gusts of wind and the great draft.

What is the weather forecast for New Year’s Eve in Houston?

New Year’s Eve will bring us cold, windy and humid weather, but hopefully the rain will clear before midnight. In fact, temperatures are expected to drop throughout the day after the cold front has entered. We should look at the temperatures of the 40s in the afternoon. At midnight on New Year’s Day, temperatures will likely be in the 1930s above and below 40 with an almost icy wind cooling factor.

Wait, you said “freeze.” Will there be snow ?!

Snow seems unlikely to Houston, but snowflakes are likely to fly somewhere in Texas on New Year’s Eve. At this time it seems more likely along and west of the I-35 corridor. Where it snows depends on the exact trail that the state-wide storm system follows, so we still can’t rule it out entirely for southeast Texas.

So you say there is a chance of snow in Houston?

Yes, there is very little probability of zero, but we still don’t expect it.
