How far are we from the herd’s immunity? The data is clear enough

More than half of the jeans have recovered from the coronavirus or have been fully vaccinated as of Monday, according to state data.

When approximately 75% of us have immunity, we will have achieved what is sometimes called “herd immunity,” when the virus can hardly spread even in the absence of safety precautions such as physical distancing and masks.

Herd immunity is a “calculated number based on the infectivity of a virus,” Dr. explained. Paul Klotman, president of Baylor College of Medicine.

For example, the herd’s immunity against the highly contagious measles virus is 95%. For normal COVID-19, it is close to 65%.

The most infectious variants make the herd’s true immunity from this pandemic 75%, Klotman said.

“I think we’re getting closer,” he added, pointing to local data.

More than half a million people in the Greater Houston new district area have officially contracted COVID-19 as of Monday.

The actual number is closer to 2.4 million, based on numerous “prevalence” studies, including a CDC study, which shows that for every COVID-19 positive, there are several others not counted.

Announcements

Approximately 1.5 million people in the region have been completely vaccinated. Together, they are approximately 3.8 million of the 7.2 million people living in Greater Houston, or about 52%.

“There will be some overlaps” in the numbers, Klotman said.

The data are approximate, but also reflect the state data.

Of Texas ’29 million, about six million have been fully vaccinated as of Monday and about 11 million have contracted the virus (officially, 2.5 million have tested positive).

That’s almost 17 million jeans with immunity or about 57%. By the time we reach about 22 million recovered or vaccinated, we will have achieved “herd immunity”.

The number of jeans vaccinated each week is rising rapidly and Dr. Klotman said we are on track to reach that high level of immunity by the end of June.

“We get there,” Dr. Klotman said. “About two months.”

When asked by Fox News if he believed Texas had secured the herd’s immunity, Gov. Greg Abbott said:

Announcements

“When you look at the elderly population, for example, more than 70% of our elderly have received a vaccine. More than 50% of those between the ages of 50 and 65 have received a vaccine. “

“I don’t know what the herd’s immunity is,” the governor added. “But when you add that to people who have acquired immunity, it looks like you could be very close to the herd’s immunity.”
