If you have your hands on a new one PlayStation 5 then you probably also have a PlayStation 4 set up with some description, and it’s not hard to scroll your PS4 games to your new PS5. You can continue playing on your new console almost immediately, but here are the steps you must follow first.
A first note on compatibility with previous versions: Say Sony the “vast majority” of PS4 games will run on the PS5, and “select” games will benefit from higher or softer frame rates. At the same time, Sony also admits that you might experience “unexpected errors or behaviors” when playing PS4 games on the PS5.
As for the drivers, you can use the PS4 DualShock or the PS5 DualSense to play your PS4 titles on PlayStation 5, whichever you feel most comfortable with (but you can’t use your old DualShock with your new PS5 games) .
As for PlayStation VR, it’s a little trickier. The vast majority of games will work, but you’ll also need to scroll through the PlayStation camera from the PS4 and request it. a free camera adapter for the Sony PS5

For PS4 games you have purchased on the disc, you can insert the same disc into your PS5 (unless it is digital editing), go to Games screen and get started, though you may need to download an update first. In some cases (as with No Man’s Sky, which we’ve included in a screenshot of this page), you’ll get a free PS5 update to download and install. In the case of digital titles, you can re-download them to your PS5 from Game library section under games.
Another potentially faster option, depending on the number of games you have, is to move your PS4 games to your PS5 on an external hard drive – probably a more attractive method if you already have a lot of titles stored. on an external drive of your old console or you don’t want to take up a lot of disk space on the new console with old games, or maybe both.
If you have not yet set up an external hard drive on your PS4, once connected go to Configuration, Devices, i USB storage devices: Select the unit and select Format as extended storage and confirm your choice. The games will be installed by default on the external drive; you can change it by going to Configuration then Storage, selecting System storageand pressing the button Options button.
You can move games from the PS4’s internal storage to your external hard drive (ready to play on the PS5) by going to Configuration i Storageand then select System storage i Applications. Choose your game, tap Options, then choose Go to Extended Storage. Select the games you want to move, then select Mou.
Once this is done, the external hard drive simply needs to be plugged into a USB port on the back of the PlayStation 5 and the PS4 titles will appear when you go to the Game library page below Games (As for disc-based games, you’ll still need it too). For many users, this will be the fastest and easiest way to start old PS4 games.
You can also use your local network to transfer titles between PS4 and PS5. This will be suggested during the PlayStation 5 setup process, but you can also do it later: To get started, you must be logged in to the same wifi network and the same PlayStation account on both consoles, and then open Configuration on your PS5 and select System, System software i Data transfer. To greatly speed up the process, you can connect the consoles with an Ethernet cable.
Finally, saved game data: It can be moved using the data transfer process we just described, either when you set up your PlayStation 5 or later. Your saved data can also be synchronized with the cloud (PlayStation Plus) or an external USB drive: choose Configuration, Application data management, Data stored in system storage, and then neither Upload to online storage or Copy to USB storage device on the PS4 to do so.
Return to the PS5, once you’ve logged in to PlayStation Plus or connected the USB storage device as needed, go to Configuration, Saved data and game / application settings, and then Saved data (PS4) to see the cloud and local options. Most of the saved PS4 data should work on the PS5, although it is ultimately at the discretion of the game developer; saved data may not be transferred, even if the game works.
