Three people were killed Saturday when a vehicle traveling incorrectly on National Highway 84 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, crashed into another vehicle, state police said.
Just after 6 p.m., state police received a report from a driver traveling west on the eastbound side of I-84, before Exit 6B.
Cash rushed to the area in an attempt to locate and stop the driver. But a few minutes after the call, the vehicle in the wrong direction hit another vehicle on the east side, police said.
Officers who responded immediately tried to save their lives, but the collision resulted in the combination of three fatalities. Police said one occupant of an SUV and two occupants of a second SUV were fatally injured.
The two vehicles involved were a Volvo XC60 with a New Hampshire registration and a Nissan Murano with a Connecticut registration, police said.
According to police, they are still collecting information about which vehicle was driving incorrectly, as well as information about the victims.
I-84 at Exit 6B was closed after the crash to aid site investigation. Traffic was diverted to Route 20, but the scene has been cleared.
The soldiers were assisted on stage by Sturbridge Fire & EMS, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Office of the Chief Forensic Physician.
The exact cause and circumstances surrounding the accident, including the reason a driver was traveling on the wrong side of the road, are still being investigated.
