Walking through the fields and forests of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla they are immensely powerful beasts. The kind of animals people tell stories about. Dangerous monsters and assassins that only a resilient, brave and perhaps foolish warrior could … Oh wait, it doesn’t matter. He was trapped on the ground like a fool.
Since the end of the main story of Valhalla and writing the review, I spent my time in the running game, completing side missions, and collecting hidden material. Sure, I’m just removing things from a big checklist, but it’s a pretty nice checklist and I have a great time doing it. Recently, I decided to start taking out the legendary animals that dot the map. Last night my target was a big bear, The Beast of the Hills. According to a guide, is a bit difficult to find, as the bear only appears during the day in its underground hiding place. He also mentions having to find some blood and track it down to the lair.
Or, you can do what I did. I quickly traveled near the site, ran towards him, and in the middle of a fight with some random enemies, found the bear stuck to the ground performing a strange dance move.
I’m not sure what happened. For now, I didn’t even realize I was watching the legendary Beast of the Hills. I assumed it was just a random bear that had been walking, trapped and would now be unworthily murdered. Only after I started attacking him did I realize that this was, in fact, the bear of legend. I have many questions in my head. How did you get here? Why was he dancing? And should he even kill the poor creature while shaking what his mother bear gave him?

Legendary animals are usually dangerous enemies that can easily kill unprepared or even hardened warriors who make some mistakes. So being able to deal with an easy death would be a good way to save time and effort.
But it was so right? It didn’t look right to me. I decided to hit her with the ax a few times to see if I could release her, at which point we could have a proper fight. A few ginger ribs were later unlocked from their strange placement on the ground and left on all fours like a natural, unnatural giant bear should do. I waited for his attack, but none came. A few moments passed. I got it right again, thinking that maybe I needed some courage to attack after being trapped in space-time for who knows how long. But even a generous portion of thwacks failed to move the magnificent beast to violence. So I sacrificed him where he was.
I felt bad, but I was also worried that if I didn’t kill him, I might get stuck somewhere else and I’ll never find him again. You know what bears are like. Then, having laboriously completed all the other checklists of this obscene and long game, I would be left with only one legendary animal in the world, which would officially make it 100% impossible. Valhalla. (Something I technically will never do because fishing in this game sucks, but look at the principle here.)
Strangely, killing him yielded nothing: no reward eithermission accomplished “ pop-up window. Uh oh! Did I just break the game? Was this karmic justice? I decided to enter the bear’s lair as it was still marked on the map. Maybe the bear would reappear, angry at his first death. But instead, once I entered the underground zone, the game gave me death, some rewards, and I passed it off the map.
A sad death for such a noble creature. I guess he died the way he lived, dancing on the hills. I don’t regret what I did, but I feel a little bad. Sometimes I wonder … am I the real monster? The true legendary beast? Anyway, something to chew on while I go to kill the rest of these furry bastards.
