Although we write about new and unreleased phones, we are aware that not everyone gets a new phone every year, not even every two years. Some people assemble their old smartphones until they turn on, but eventually everyone is forced to upgrade. This could be the case for certain T-Mobile subscribers in 2021, such as Android Police obtained internal documents this week detailing 19 devices that will stop connecting to the operating company’s network in January.

According to the documents, this change will affect old phones, tablets, cameras and more. T-Mobile began notifying affected customers by mail on Dec. 18 and will then send SMS text messages on Dec. 28 to those with phones that no longer connect to the network.

Most of the phones on this list are from 2015 or earlier and, impressive as it may be, if someone managed to keep any of these phones as a daily controller for half a decade, it’s probably not very safe to use them anyway as they all stopped receiving updates years ago. If for any other reason, anyone using these devices should update just because they have security patches that could keep their private data safe from malicious actors.
That said, if you’ve held out for so long, it may be worth waiting a week or two before upgrading, as a page in the document tells T-Mobile employees to “be on the lookout for additional offers specifically targeted at affected customers. “. No bids have yet been made public, but if T-Mobile will provide subscribers with an incentive to stay online, it will likely happen before the January 29 closing date.
As for an explanation, Android Police assumed it could have something to do with VoLTE’s “T-Mobile requirement for all devices to be able to connect to our network,” starting in January 2021, but T-Mobile says it’s not like this. It turns out that this is the case, but there is also good news: affected customers will receive a new device for free. According to the report, options include the Samsung Galaxy A21, Galaxy A11, Alcatel GO FLIP 3 and T-Mobile REVVL 4.
