Candace Ayers, 66, of Springfield, died of COVID in early September. According to his son, he had rheumatoid arthritis. The family felt relieved when she was fully vaccinated against coronavirus in the spring.
But after traveling to Mississippi in July to comfort a friend who had lost her husband, Ayers tested positive for COVID.
She was hospitalized and then transferred to the ICU and spent the last three weeks of her life in a ventilator, her family said.
In her wake, her family wrote that Ayers “was vaccinated, but was infected by others who chose not to be vaccinated.” They said “the cost cost him his life.”
Ayers ’son said his mother’s legacy is already impacting and that he has received messages from people who planned the vaccine after hearing his story.
