I’ve often explained why it’s unlikely to go from iPhone to Android. I’m too ingrained in Apple’s ecosystem and everything “just * works”. Yes, there will be problems here and there, but the combined iPhone-Mac is unbeatable. It’s not just Apple’s hardware. It’s Apple’s hardware and software for these products and the way they intertwine. Not to mention all the premium apps for iPhone and / or Mac that you should leave behind. Add other items to the mix if you have them, such as Apple Watch, AirPods, iPad, and Apple TV, and transfer to Android is even harder.

With all this in mind, iPhone, iOS, Mac and macOS cannot evolve and stay competitive without the pressure of Google and Microsoft. The better the Android and Windows hardware, and the more refined and reliable Android and Windows 10 are, the better Apple’s experience will be. That’s why I love this Pixel innovation and I hope Google finds a way to make it possible with Pixel 6 or 7.

Google Pixel has never been the iPhone variant of the Android ecosystem. Google has been a fast follower in most cases, looking for inspiration from Cupertino. The design and features of the iPhone were adapted year after year, although Google would first criticize them. Some examples are the removal of headphone connectors and rear cameras with multiple lenses. Unfortunately, the result was not as good a phone as the iPhone. Google has encountered hardware or software issues with each or every generation of pixels. Some were solvable. Some led to settlements over collective actions.

The Pixel 5 is the culmination of disappointments. Many praise the affordable price and high-end features, but the Pixel 5 is not the kind of phone it could have been. It’s not a flagship that can put real pressure on Apple.

This brings us to the following images of a Pixel of Christmas future. They come from a design patent that Google filed in mid-March 2019 at the USPTO. The agency just granted the patent to the Pixel maker in early December.

What the images show is a device that looks a lot like the current Pixel 5. It has a screen display, a much better screen design option than the creepy Pixel 4. On the back, we have a system of dual lens camera, but it’s not the back panel that interests me.

There is no perforated camera on the screen. This is the design that Google used for the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a this year. The implication seems to be that Google is already working on in-screen selfie camera technology. The design shows the location of the top speaker and buttons, so you should definitely have the punch camera.

“It’s no surprise,” smartphone fans will say, noting that every major player in the business is developing one. In fact, ZTE is the first headset provider to launch a device with an under-screen camera. It is not widely available and is not a flagship, but it is the first in the world.

The problem with the cameras displayed on the screen is the quality of the photos and selfie videos. Smartphone manufacturers need to find a way to get enough light to reach the sensor through the screen that covers the camera. They need algorithms that can compensate for the problems that arise and ensure that the selfie experience is not inferior. After all, selfies are still a thing.

You may have already noticed why this Pixel patent is exciting. If Google wants to launch a Pixel phone with a camera under the screen, Google is also developing its own algorithms for this technology. And Google knows how to make computer photography work. Pixel phones may have had several issues, but Google turned them into amazing cameras, rivaling and outperforming the other Android and iPhone. The night view mode was amazing and forced everyone to find an answer.

Google could do the same with poorly visualized camera algorithms and force everyone to adapt quickly. It’s not that companies, including Apple and Samsung, aren’t looking at the same technology. But one thing is to have only a ZTE phone and Xiaomi and Oppo concepts with technology. It’s another thing for Google to launch a Pixel 6 or 7 with an under-screen camera.

That said, there is no guarantee that Google will be more successful than its rivals or that it will launch a Pixel phone with a perfect design for all screens this year. However, the fact that he filed the patent last year shows that he is studying the technology.

Apple is expected to keep the iPhone slot in place for at least a year. Placing the camera under the screen is one thing. Doing the same with Face ID is another matter. But without a doubt, Apple wants to offer buyers the same iPhone perfect for all screens. Over the years, we’ve seen many patents and rumors from Apple to support this.
