A man who was crushed to death by his own car in a strange accident at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Vancouver last week has been named father of married children.
Tony Eyles, 42, accidentally dropped his bank card while going to pay for breakfast while visiting the restaurant around 5:30 p.m.
He got out of his vehicle to retrieve it, but immediately the car jumped forward and “collided with a structural part of the restaurant,” Vancouver police say.
Eyles was trapped between the side of his vehicle and the shop window and died crushed.
He died a few weeks before his ninth wedding anniversary and left behind two children, a boy and a girl, aged eight and six, in addition to his wife, Caitlin.

Loved ones described Eyles as “an amazing husband, father, friend and co-worker” on a GoFundMe page created to raise money for his family.
He was “the kind of guy who would give you the back shirt,” Eyles’ brother-in-law Neal Pender said, speaking to a CTV.
“He was the most passionate father and the most loving husband … he was the perfect guy.”

A family man who “did his best to please everyone,” was hailed by his brother-in-law as “the perfect father, the perfect husband,” in a separate interview with CityNews.
“Everything he did, he did for them. He did a fantastic job raising those kids with my sister.
But Pender lamented the fact that his sister’s children are now growing up fatherless.
“They’ve made some comments about how much they already miss their father. His son told me yesterday, ‘I’ve only known my father for eight years, it’s not long enough.’
He added, “My sister is fighting, of course.”
The week following the unforeseen tragedy, more than $ 110,000 was raised for his family in two separate fundraisers.

The incident occurred right next to a busy intersection, between Main Street and Terminal Avenue, and was captured by surveillance images from the restaurant.
Vancouver fire rescue services and Vancouver police were called to the scene almost immediately, and despite efforts by medical officers, Eyles was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This is an absolutely heartbreaking scenario. Our deepest condolences are presented to this man’s family and friends,” said Officer Tania Visintin of the Vancouver Police Department.
“People are not used to these kinds of incidents happening, especially in your workplace. I guess everyone is shaken.”
“Normally, when we hear about a fatal motor vehicle accident, it’s usually a collision with another vehicle.”
“So the fact that there was no other vehicle involved … seems like a strange accident,” Visintin told 680 News.
The British Coroners Service and the Vancouver Police Department’s Collision Investigation Unit are conducting an investigation, which called Eyles’ death a “tragedy.”
