Former Kentucky star Immanuel Quickley continues to prove he is arguably the stealer of the 2020 NBA draft.
After an inconsistent start to the season, the New York Knicks rookie has scored a total of six figures in six of the team’s last nine games, including 31 points against Portland on January 24 and 25 points yesterday in the night against Cleveland.
With continued production and growth for the 6-foot and 3-foot guard, CBS Sports has moved Quickley to No. 3 in the NBA Rookie Power Rankings, just behind James Wiseman at No. 1 and Anthony Edwards at No. 2. .
Here’s what they had to say about the old wild cat:
Quickley has become the love of the rookie class this season and for good reason. His float has already been announced as the deadliest in the game and he is one of the best scorers in the league. Last week he became the second rookie of the season to add 30 points in a game (former Kentucky teammate Tyrese Maxey is the other).
What’s most impressive about Quickley’s performance, though, is that he made it off the bench. He is constantly proving his worth on this young Knicks roster and, if he continues on this track, it will make it difficult for coach Tom Thibodeau not to put him in early training.
“We saw it from the first day he got here as he faced things,” Thibodeau said after Quickley’s 25-point performance Friday night. “He is a student of the game, a great worker, a great attitude, a great approach. And the ups and downs of an NBA season, I think he prepares really well and his confidence comes from his preparation.
“He has a great concentration, a great effort every day. And he can play well even when he’s not shooting well. Obviously, he has a lot of confidence in this shot and in his overall game. And he’s one of those guys who will keep getting better every time. I am very pleased with their progress. “
When asked about his outstanding performance, one in which he defeated five triples, Quickley said he credits his hard work and dedication to improving every day.
“Hard work, dedication and loyalty to the process, which gets better every day, good games, bad games,” Quickley said. “You want to keep finding ways to improve every day.”
“It was a team effort. That’s what we follow. We try to be one of the best defensive teams in the league.” – Immanuel Quickley
