Credit card processing company TSYS, one of the largest companies of its kind in the United States, suffered a disruption Saturday night. According to one of its customers, Shift4 Payments, its system was unable to process transactions.
According to the company, the cut affected payment providers and customers. Businesses across the Triangle were unable to accept credit card payments Saturday night.
About three hours after the outage was identified, Shift4 said payments were being successfully processed through the TSYS platform.
“While Shift4 did not cause processing interruption tonight, we will do well and compensate all of our customers for lost revenue,” the company wrote on Twitter. “We will always do well for our customers.”
Michael Collins, manager of Abbey Road Tavern and Grill in Cary, said his business was affected by the cut for about three hours. Kotuku Surf Club, a bar in central Durham, was forced to close on Saturday night due to problems with credit card payments.
“It definitely surprised us,” Collins said. “Unfortunately, that led to a few steps by customers who had no other way to pay. We quickly put a ‘Cash Only’ sign on the door. But that has hurt Saturday’s sales.”
WRAL spectators say they had trouble paying with their card at the Durham Bulls game on Saturday night.
In Las Vegas, KSNV news reports that Allegiant Stadium was having trouble processing payments during the WWE Summer Slam.
All the restaurants in Rocky Mount, Dunn, Clayton and Greenville had payment processing issues. Wayne Peede, who worked at the Buggys Bar in Greenville Saturday night, said the bar had to hand-write credit card numbers. Others say they had trouble paying Saturday night at the Greenville Mall.
It is unclear at this time what caused the disruption.
