Six people were killed, including a pregnant woman, in a shooting inside an Indianapolis home in the early hours of Sunday, CBS affiliate WTTV reports. Police said a minor was also hospitalized in critical condition. According to WTTV, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Randall Taylor described the shooting as a “mass murder.”
The shooting occurred at block 3500 Adams Street in the early hours of Sunday, the station said, on the northeast side of the Indy.
Police had originally been sent to the nearby 3300 block of E 36th Street around 3:45 a.m., WTTV said, where a minor was found with a gunshot. Police said he was hospitalized and is expected to survive.
After investigating that incident, police headed to the Adams Street site around four in the morning, where they discovered several people shot inside a house. Officials confirmed that six people had been shot dead, including a pregnant woman and her unborn child. They believe the shot was a targeted attack.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The Associated Press said Sunday night that there were no suspects in custody.
“… what we saw this morning was another kind of evil. What happened this morning, based on the evidence gathered so far, was a mass murder,” Taylor said Sunday. “More than that, we think it wasn’t accidental.”
Taylor mentioned that Sunday’s crime was the largest mass murder in the city in more than a decade, according to AP.
He also mentioned that he is “determined” to find answers to the deadly shooting and asked the public to help provide any information by calling the IMPD homicide office at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
On Sunday afternoon, the Marion County coroner released the names of the victims, ages 13 to 42, as well as the child to be born.
