Indonesian authorities said on Sunday that what appeared to be “human remains” had been found at the site where a passenger plane carrying 56 people had just taken off from Jakarta allegedly crashed into the Java Sea on Saturday.
The leader of the Jakarta Police Medical Department has assured the press gathered at the site that he has received a bag containing remains believed to have been from the plane and a “part of a body”.
Remains of a cable belonging to the aircraft have also been found, according to local news channel Kompas.

The aircraft disappeared from tracking instruments when it flew over Lancang Island. According to the FlightRadar tracking website, the plane lost more than 10,000 feet in altitude in less than a minute, about 4 minutes after leaving Jakarta.
In October 2018, a Boeing 737 Max belonging to the Lion Air airline crashed in the Java Sea in an accident in which all 189 people on board died.
