DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Public health officials in Iowa’s largest county are sounding alarms because too few people wear masks and get vaccinated as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations go up in the state until levels not seen since January.
The increase in the delta variant of COVID-19 occurs as schools return to session, with masks banned by a Republican legislator and governor.
The Iowa Department of Public Health, in its weekly update, added 42 deaths Wednesday, bringing the state total to 6,268.
The state reported 7,619 positive tests in the last seven days. He said 17 percent of positive tests occurred among children under 17, compared to 13 percent.
