Iran hangs disgruntled journalist, accuses him of inciting

Jam was found guilty of “corruption on earth”, which did not indicate a crime, but was sometimes said to have been attempted by the Iranian government to overthrow it. Jam ran the online opposition news site Amat News, which has been accused of inciting violence during deadly protests in 2017 and 2018, according to Tehran, a semi-official Tasnim news agency in 2019. Reporters Without Borders said Saturday it was “outraged by this new crime of Iranian justice.” The group campaigned for the abolition of the death penalty on bail, accusing him of “illegally abducted and arrested” and “attempted in a very unjust manner”. Jam was deported to France in October 2019 when he was arrested by Iranian authorities. The circumstances of how and where he was detained are not clear. The journalist left France on October 11, according to the French Foreign Ministry. Three days later, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard issued a statement saying it was detaining him. Following his arrest, Iranian authorities released a video of Jam in a car. The video also shows him sitting in front of a camera and apologizing for his action. According to Iran’s semi-official Force News Agency, Iran has accused Jam of working with US, French and Israeli intelligence. Iran has been one of the most repressive countries in the world for 40 years, according to reporters without borders. The group says at least 860 journalists and civilian-journalists have been imprisoned or hanged in Iran since 1979.
