It’s hard to believe, but we’re already at the end of this year and heading for a new one. Hopefully, get ready to spend New Year’s Eve with loved ones celebrating a fantastic year and the beginning of another. And hopefully you have at least one New Year’s Day or New Year’s Day off.
Of course, with certain holidays, many investors and traders wonder if they have a chance to buy and sell stocks on New Year’s Eve. Can you?
Is the stock market open on New Year’s Eve?
Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq will open their usual New Year’s Eve hours; that is, it will open at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time and close at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time. New traders wondering if December 31 still allows trades can be sure that you will have the usual hours at your disposal.
However, if you are wondering about the bond market, it closes soon. The bond market will close at 2pm East on New Year’s Eve, so do your work early that day. Currency market hours will vary, but most are expected to be open at least part of the day.
Is the stock market open on New Year’s Day?
No. In celebration of the new year, neither the NYSE nor the Nasdaq are open for New Year’s Day. Bond markets will also close on January 1st.
When does the stock market close?
After New Year’s Day, the bag will open and close at the aforementioned normal schedule for a few weeks.
The next time markets close in 2021 will be Monday, Jan. 20, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
