Israel achieves Hamas targets in Gaza in response to the rocket

Israeli planes attacked a series of targets in the Gaza Strip in the early hours of Monday in response to rocket launches outside Hamas-ruled territory. It was the third night in a row of fighting between the two sides, even as Israel’s foreign minister tried to hang incentives for calm.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid on Sunday called for a new approach to ending the cycle of fighting with Hamas, which outlined an international investment plan in Gaza’s infrastructure in exchange for pressure on Hamas to stop its military accumulation and preserve calm.

“The policy that Israel has pursued so far has not substantially changed the situation,” Lapid said during a speech at Reichman University, north of Tel Aviv.

“We need to change direction,” he added.

Much of his proposal, which he said was made in consultation with the United States and other countries, had already been raised before, but has never been implemented because of fighting, deep mistrust and bitter internal divisions. from both sides. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, whom Lapid will replace in 2023 under a rotation agreement, did not immediately comment on the proposal.

In the latest violence, Hamas fired rockets at Israel that were shot down by the country’s Iron Dome defense system, the army said, adding that fighter jets attacked a military site belonging to Hamas. Within hours, the army reported a stabbing attack at the Gush Etzion crossroads south of Bethlehem.

Hamas is pushing for Israel to end a parallel blockade that has devastated Gaza’s economy, while Israel is demanding that Hamas release two captive Israeli civilians and return the remains of two dead Israeli soldiers.

Hamas has controlled Gaza since it ousted forces from the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority in 2007, a year after the Islamic militant group won Palestinian parliamentary elections.
