As New Year’s Eve approaches, there are several different events and celebrations planned almost everywhere on the island.
In Oak Harbor, catch the fireworks at Windjammer Park, from 9pm For 15 glorious minutes, these “high” fireworks will illuminate the sky. The surrounding Flintstone and Smith Parks also offer views.
Penn Cove Taproom will host a decades-old New Year’s Eve party at its Oak Harbor location from 8 p.m. to 1 p.m. Specials in food and drink, party favors and midnight toasts are all features of this soiree.

For those who are on both ends of the island and want to sound like the new year with an icy swim, the Polar Bear Dive will take place in both Oak Harbor and Freeland. De Freeland Double Bluff Beach will serve as the location for the South End. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and the jump is done at noon. This event costs $ 15 and includes a t-shirt and hot drinks.
And for those looking for a less humid way to start their new year, there will be several excursions on the first day in Deception Pass State Park i Fort Casey. Discover passes will not be required to participate.
There will be two excursions to choose from at Deception Pass State Park: a half-mile loop accessible for ADA and strollers or a two-mile hike that gains about 100 feet of altitude. Children and dogs are welcome on both tracks. Those interested in joining can meet at West Beach Shelter at 10 p.m.
Guided walks in Fort Casey will also offer two options. An ADA-accessible walk will begin at 1 p.m., and a full exploration of the fort will begin at 3:30 p.m. Provisioning will be provided later.
